A Letter to Those of You who Arrived at FiveBlondes via Search Engines December 3, 2007

Firstly, thank you for visiting.  If I knew you were coming I’d have baked a cake.

To the visitor who searched for “where is nudge button scrabulous“: alas, Scrabulous has altered the use of the ‘nudge’.  No longer can you nudge at will; now they make you wait a few days.  Personally I enjoy that feature as I have had up to 12 games on the go at once.  It can be hard to keep up!

For our many visitors who arrive with inquiries on how to keep track of who has visited your Facebook profile page:  I must redirect you to  They note that there is currently only one FB (same initials as FiveBlondes…coincidence? Yeah, prolly) app that tracks who visited your page – and those viisting must also have that app for it to work properly (if at all).  Anyway, it’s called Trazkor, and it doesn’t seem to work.

Looking for Erica Lauren, adult film star?  Well, we have Erica and we have Lauren, but sadly (for you) no Erica Lauren.

Lastly, we have what is perhaps my favorite source of traffic.  Those of you looking for “Lululemon Butt Pics”.  While we do love our Lulu, if there are any pictures of our butts in them, it is not intentional.

So, to all you disappointed visitors I extend my apologies and st the same time I thank you for visiting.  I hope you found something you liked.

Blog Review October 1, 2007

I recently came upon a new blog, that I felt the need to share with the world and express my love for it.

Confessions of a Pioneer Woman

This blog (updated daily) is written by a woman, who in her earlier years was city woman who went to college in Los Angelas. She moved home after college and met a man she calls ” The Marlboro Man” whom she eventually married. Marlboro Man is a cowboy rancher in Oklahoma and Ree always has interesting stories of life on the ranch. Together they have 4 adorable children.

Here’s Ree’s bibliography from her website:

“I’m Ree, a.k.a. Pioneer Woman. Welcome to my frontier!

I’m a thirty-something ranch wife, mother of four, and moderately-agoraphobic middle child who grew up on a golf course in the city. I attended college in Los Angeles and wore black pumps to work every day. I ate sushi and treated myself to pedicures on a semi-regular basis. I even kissed James Garner in an elevator once. Now I live in the middle of nowhere on a working cattle ranch. My days are spent changing diapers, chipping dried manure from boots, washing jeans, and frying calf nuts. I have no idea how I got here, but you know what? I love it. Don’t tell anyone.

I hope you enjoy my website. Here, I write about my decade long transition from spoiled city girl to domestic country wife. I post frequent audio clips of my children mispronouncing simple words and of me doing Ethel Merman impersonations. I also share delightful audio clips of different styles of burps as well as photos of my son picking his nose. I’ve been known to record phone conversations with my retarded brother, Mike. Please don’t be offended; I’m a Middle Child. And I’m just keepin’ it real.

I’ve embarrassed myself a lot. Once, I spilled a pot of hot tea on Gary Coleman’s lap.

love taking pictures and post frequent photos of my life on a working cattle ranch. And semi-regularly, I hold “Give That Photo a Name” contests, in which my readers enter suggested photo titles for a particular photo I’ve posted. The prizes are fabulous, and I get to swim around in your creativity for a day. Don’t miss ‘em!

In my spare time, I also manage to write, take pictures of nature, and compose ridiculous poetry in an effort to chronicle this bizarre, beautiful, and often hilarious journey I’m on. Thank you for allowing me to share it with you.

Also, check out my separate food blog, The Pioneer Woman Cooks! There, I post step-by-step pictorials of all the cowboy-pleasin’ dishes I’ve had to learn to cook over the years. You’ll love ‘em.”

You gotta check this blog out, it’s official I’m hooked!

It’s LEAH! Finallement. September 17, 2007

Hi all!

Well, my life has finally started to make sense again – for the first time since April. Well, not that it has fallen apart but just that it has been crazy and hectic.

First I will tell you a bit about myself and then I will tell you about my life during the past 4 months.

I am daughter #4. The tallest one, obviously a blonde, some could say the craziest I suppose. I am in my fourth year of university, graduating this year! (Hopefully!) I live in my university town with two other crazy girls who I also work with at a local pub where I serve and bartend. It truly is the best job I have ever had – it’s fun, my bosses are great, my coworkers are even better and so far I am winning the football pool with another girl I work with ($500 bucks each!). I enjoy -in no special order- reading (right now I am reading “Practical Magic” written by Alice Hoffman, my current 2nd favourite book after Summer Sisters by Judy Blume, for the fourth time) I like country music, dancing, trivia at our on campus bar (my team won this week, it’s a pretty big deal), hair straighteners, backpacks, shopping, partying hard, WINE! (my current favourite is Wolff Blass Cabernet Sauvignon – I highly recommend it) biking, microwave popcorn, dressing up, theatre (on Friday I was at a theatre in my university town watching a series of monologues about women and mental disorders), cuddling, Michael Buble, The Wreckers and The Dixie Chicks and so many other things – like my amazing boyfriend who won a hot tub on Thursday night. Guess what I did yesterday? Spent 6 hours hot tubbing in his backyard with him and two of his roomies.

I guess you could say I am a very “random” person, and you can probably tell that through my writing style as it jumps around a lot. I live by the minute, and one of my favourite mottos is “Fun is what you make of it.” One of my guilty pleasures is reading … about twice a day.

A question I often ask people in order to get to know then a little bit better is inquiring about their dream job – no matter what the cost/pay is, what would you like to do that would make you happy and allow you to have fun at work. I guess I, personally, have two – a doctor (I love people, and getting to know then and talking to them and helping them to get better and I think being a doctor would be so interesting) or a supermodel (I have been informed that I would have to eat only celery sticks and probably do a lot of speed, but I am kind of okay with that! Haha.)

Anyways, back to about my life. I spent the month of May in Costa Rica, doing a bit of everything. Community Development work (I lived on the side of a mountain with a family in a tiny town north of San Jose), I fell in love with surfing while I was there, I traveled around a bit, explored a rainforest in the middle of a torrential rain storm, planted a TON of trees, taught english, built a gym at a high school. My boyfriend came up for a week and we spent the time hiking, on the beach, discovering the Manual Antonio National Park (which was so amazing, I never imagined I would ever see half the things I did) snorkeling, quadding, and hiking all around the nearby towns. After returning to Canada, I spent the rest of the summer working at the pub every day and chilling in my university town. Living in the city was a bit of a change, as I have spent every other summer in the country, or way up north in Ontario working at a secluded fishing lodge. All summer I was subletting a room from my best friend’s little sister, we didn’t have internet, cable, or anything so blogging for me was hard to do. It was an amazing summer nonetheless.

This post has gotten way too long, I have homework to do and I work at 5, then it is back to the hot tub for this girl.

I hope everyone is having a good time at Bridal Shower # 3

that I am missing today!

It’s the Weekend – Time to Relax! September 7, 2007

TGIFHappy Friday y’all!

We have some cool links for you today, a blog promotion tip, and – the best – ANTICIPATION! Kate and Scott’s Stag and Doe is this weekend. The planning and preparation is pretty much over. Judging from the last Stag and Doe we all went to, there will be some crazy pictures resulting. Plus, we’ll tell you how to plan a super-successful stag and doe / buck and doe / jack and jill / wedding social. Definitely the most entertaining way to celebrate and help fun your wedding!

Blog Promotion Tip

Are you on Facebook, and have a WordPress blog as well? Let your friends know about it by adding the WordPress app to your profile. We found a blogger who posted great instructions on adding the WordPress app to your profile. Thanks, Thomas!

Erica, Micaela, and Katelyn have it on their profiles, and FiveBlondes has seen a good amount of traffic come through from our friends clicking through. Thanks, friends! Now, go tell your friends who don’t know us, ok? OK!

When it comes to shopping and fun finds, there’s one website I check every day: Outblush is “The Shopping Blog for Women” – what could be better? Outblush always finds the cutest and trendiest clothes, accessories, home decor, gadgets, books, and more! They have a newsletter and RSS feed so you can get the best stuff, however you want it. What’s your favorite item this week?

E-mail Icon Generator

Our fun online find this week is a custom email image generator. This is great tool to use for your blog or website – put it in your sidebar if you want to let people know how to reach you, without falling prey to an evil SPAM-BOT trolling the web for your email address! If you have an address with a common provider such as Gmail or Hotmail (check out the list!) , you can get an image with their logo on it. This is fantastic for people with visual memories! If your email provider isn’t represented, no worries – you can get a custom button made, and even pick your own colours. I made two – one for our GMail addy, and a custom button for our fiveblondes [dot] ca address.

Why don’t you email us? We’d love to hear from you.

Checked your Facebook privacy settings before? Check again. September 6, 2007

Yesterday, Facebook announced that they “are making limited public search listings available to people who are not logged in to Facebook. ”  What does this mean exactly?  It means that any Tom, Dick or Harry on the internet who can type in a search bar and hit “Search” might be able to find your Facebook listing and poke you, send you a message, see your profile picture, and view your friends list.

This is not so cool. I am not impressed. First Facebook opened registration to everyone who wants to sign up – but it was still a ‘closed network’ to the rest of the online world and gave the illusion of security.  It must be secure if you need to login before you can see anything, right?  Yes and no.  We gave all of our information to Facebook.  Do you know the guys who run FB? I don’t. I don’t know anyone who does. How about all of those checkboxes you have to ensure are selected before you can add an app? Have you thought about what they mean? They mean that you are giving all of your information to the creators of the app, whoever they may be.  Whatever they may use your information for.
I know I’m a hypocrite. I use Facebook every day. I have a couple of apps on my profile (one being the WordPress app).  I wasn’t too concerned, because I’ve been very selective with the apps I’ve added, and so far I’ve had no reason to mistrust Facebook – until my boss pointed out this fact to me at work today:

Now, Facebook is no more ‘secure’ than Myspace. It makes sense though, doesn’t it? Do you know anyone who would say “why yes, I’d love my Facebook profile to be available from [insert search engine here]!!”  I’m sure they are out there (like those Facebookers who use their profiles as marketing tools), but it’s not your average user.

As soon as you are done reading this post, go login to your Facebook profile.  Click “privacy” in the upper right hand corner.  Click on “Edit Settings” for “Search”.  If you do nothing else, at least make your profile unaccessible by search engines.

If this information hasn’t compelled you to take any action, I ask you: What does your profile picture look like? Do you look like someone that you would consider ’employable’ by a respectable company?

If your answer is ‘no’, please realize that a potential employer is very likely to search for you in Google, or in Facebook.  Now go change your privacy settings.
